A cold, hidden world

Washington Post– A Russian drill team is just about to break through into a lake beneath the Antarctic ice sheet. They had hoped to drill through last (Antarctic) summer, but had run out of time. The lake is isolated from the surface, and has been for a very, very long time. Researchers are excited to see what kinds of life we’ll discover in this strange place, and figure out how they’re surviving down there. These sorts of things help us think about the possibility of life on other worlds, and the parallels between Lake Vostok and Europa (or Enceladus) are obvious.
