NYT– Paleontologists have finally found a long sought-after transitional fossil- we’ve known for a long time that the tiny bones in the ears of mammals came from bones which are part of the jaw in early reptiles, but we hadn’t found that smoking gun link between the two. Not any more! This is the power of evolutionary science. We predicted that there must be transitional forms about 120 million years old, and BAM! There they are. This is similar to the recent discovery of tiktaalik (which even made an appearance on Colbert), a transitional species between fish and tetrapods (four-legged land animals). They knew it would be found in late Devonian rocks, so they went looking in early Devonian rocks, and there it was.
If you know anyone who doesn’t “believe” in evolution, this stuff should really make them think.
